Roasted in Ethiopia.Rooted in origin.

Exceptional Ethiopian coffee, carefully sourced and thoughtfully roasted. From Ethiopia’s diverse coffee-growing regions to tables around the world, we bring the character of Ethiopian coffee to life one roast at a time.

Origins

Coffee is the bloodline of Ethiopian life.

The story of The Coffee Society Ethiopia© is a celebration of the coffee culture of Ethiopia, dating back to the 9th century when coffee was discovered by a goat herder in the Kaffa region.

In sickness and health, in happy times and sadness, in death and birth, in defeat and triumph, coffee is woven into the rich tapestry of Ethiopian culture and social life as a way of bringing people together.

The Coffee Society Ethiopia© is a celebration of this rich history, and a platform for sharing coffee arabica from the birthplace of coffee with the world — one cup at a time.

More than a thousand different varietals of coffee bean grow in Ethiopia. The world has tasted only a handful of them. We aim to change that.

Ripe coffee cherries on the branch, red and green side by side

Working with small farmers, farm cooperatives, local communities and a team of coffee experts, The Coffee Society Ethiopia© — a woman owned business — focuses on sourcing the best and most unique coffee throughout Ethiopia: from the southern mountainous region, to the eastern walled city of Harrar, to the highlands of the north and Lake Bahir Dar, and everywhere in between.

These naturally harvested and processed coffees undergo a rigorous quality control process in certified labs, and are cupped, graded and packaged — as green, roasted, ground, instant coffee or espresso grade.

Craft

From cherry to roast.

Exceptional coffee deserves thoughtful handling at every stage. We carefully source, assess and prepare our coffees before bringing them through a rigorous quality-control process. Our coffees are tested, cupped, graded and prepared to preserve what makes each origin unique.

Impact

When coffee farmers thrive, coffee thrives.

Coffee supports millions of people across Ethiopia, with the majority of farmers operating as smallholders. For us, sourcing coffee is therefore about more than buying a commodity.

We work to create markets for a wider range of Ethiopian coffees and ensure that the farmers we work with have the opportunity not simply to remain in coffee, but to thrive. Our work includes supporting farmers through materials and equipment, technical support, knowledge sharing and greater access to markets.

12 million

people engaged in the coffee value chain in Ethiopia.

Our success should become their success

There are an estimated 12 million people engaged in the entire value chain of coffee production in Ethiopia. As the export market focuses on a select varietal, farmers who specialize in others are forced out of the sector — sometimes opting to farm kat, or to leave the sector altogether in search of employment. That exodus affects farmers and their families first, but carries environmental and social costs far beyond them.

The Coffee Society Ethiopia© strives to keep these farmers on their land and in their trade by creating a market and an equitable share of it. We work with local farmers to increase yield, enhance capacity, and create a trickle-down and trickle-up effect in their communities.
